Top 5 Street Foods & Drinks You Must Try When You Are in Kolkata

Bengalis are known to be foodies and thus Kolkata should be considered the food-heaven. There are a huge range of street foods to choose from. From the most famous 'Aloor Chop' to special Tea in 'maatir bhanr' or earthen cups, a foodie would not travel this place with an empty stomach. Let's see what are the five most popular street foods or drinks to be found here in Kolkata. (Completely my opinion. Do not judge by the numbering, a foodie should not discriminate among foods.)

1. Phuchka: For any Bengali (especially women) there is nothing as tempting as a succulent piece of phuchka. It's basically fried dough (mini Puris) filled with a stuffing of  mashed potato, boiled chickpeas, coriander  and some spices. This is served with a paani/jol prepared by mixing jaljeera (basically a blend of different spices), lemon and tamarind pulp. I bet you'll fall in love with it as soon as you take the first bite. The best phuchka, according to me, is to be found at Vivekananda Park, Southern Avenue. But you must keep it in mind that everyone has a personal favourite when it comes to phuchka.

2. Sugarcane Juice: If you are out of luck and visit Kolkata in summer, you have to take a sip of the freshly pressed 'Aakher Rosh' or sugarcane juice. You all might know about the benefits of sugarcane juice. It is served with a pinch of black salt and a few drops of lemon that instantly refresh your mind and of course your body.

3. Dimer Devil (Kolkata-style deviled eggs/egg-pakora): This is another ultimate Bengali favourite. To make this delicacy, boiled eggs are cut in halves and a filling (made with mashed potato and spices) is placed on top of every half thus shaping it like an whole egg again. Then the eggs are dipped into egg wash and coated with bread crumbs and then fried. You can find this yumminess at Golbari or Mitra Cafe.

4. Aloor Chop (Potato pakora): This is an ultimate Bengali snack. If it's raining in Kolkata or if there are guests at your house, your parents would definitely ask you to bring some Aloor Chop. No Bengali adda would be complete without a cup of tea and aloor chop. If you are a Bengali, you cannot ignore the significance of aloor chop in your life! Every Kolkata street or lane must have a stall vending different kind of chops.

5. Kabiraji Cutlet: Forgive me for putting this at #5, Bengalis. Kabiraji cutlet is a distinctive Bengali delicacy. It can be made of chicken, fish or mutton. The outer mesh-like covering is made of egg. The covering makes it more visibly attractive and irresistible. The name Kabiraji is derived from the word 'Coverage' cutlet. The best Kabiraji cutlet, in my opinion, can be found at Mitra Cafe, Shobhabazar.
